Synopsis

Released to commemorate the milestone centennial anniversary of Joe Kubert's legacy, this premium archival hardcover serves as an essential milestone due to the first-ever printing of a shelved historical artifact. While a completely different, standard World War II story titled “What’s to Tell?” was published in the pages of Sgt. Rock Special #1 back in 1992, this volume debuts an entirely separate, unreleased version of the concept that was left in the DC Comics publishing vaults for over three decades. Written by legendary scribe Robert Kanigher, this long-sidelined draft is a 15-page story like the original contained within the anthology, intentionally shattering standard chronological boundaries to stage an impossible creative jam session between three of his most distinct creations across time. The script weaves a surreal, dream-like tapestry where Enemy Ace (Hans von Hammer), Sgt. Rock, and the silver-age Metal Men are pulled from their respective eras—World War I, World War II, and the sci-fi modern age. Rather than a conventional tactical battlefield mission, their connection is purely thematic and psychological. Kanigher and Kubert utilize these wildly disparate characters to look back across generations, contrasting the mechanical, unfeeling nature of the robotic Metal Men against the deeply human, devastating toll of combat shared between the weary infantryman Rock and the honor-bound, isolated Rittmeister Hans von Hammer.

Collector Notes

The publication is presented in an oversized 18 x 27 cm deluxe hardcover format. Because the rest of the book's extensive pages are entirely dedicated to standard, standalone Sgt. Rock solo infantry reprints, this collection serves as a hyper-specific, premium acquisition for tracking down the historic printing debut of Kubert's long-lost visual thesis on the unchanging nature of duty and war.
