Synopsis

Set in 1969, the story follows an emotionally shattered young American journalist and Vietnam War veteran named Edward Mannock. Traumatized by his recent combat tour as an underground tunnel rat in Củ Chi, Mannock travels to a West German convalescent nursing home to interview the legendary, now elderly and infirm Hans von Hammer. As the dying von Hammer looks back on his brutal dogfights in the skies of World War I, the narrative weaves back and forth between 1914–1918 and the jungles of Vietnam. Rather than glorifying their exploits, both men share their deep nightmares, unraveling the comforting myths of warfare to expose a raw, shared psychological affliction: survivor's guilt. They find profound comfort in one another, proving that across generations and opposing borders, the true casualties of war are always the men who survive it.

Collector Notes

The graphic novel was a massive critical darling, earning nominations for both the Eisner and Harvey Awards, as well as the Angoulême Best Foreign Graphic Novel award. It also won the SpeakEasy Award for Best Foreign Graphic Novel in England.

Due to its visceral, searingly accurate psychological exploration of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and combat trauma, War Idyll was placed on the official required reading list at the West Point Military Academy.

Pratt used an expressionistic, murky, and blurry multimedia painting style (incorporating acrylics, inks, and collage). This design choice was intentional, capturing the dark, dreamlike, and fragmented nature of traumatic memories. He fully wrote and painted every single page of the story over a grueling three-year development cycle.

The Limited Edition included "The Journal of Hans von Hammer" (Acetate Pages). The 16-page bonus section at the back of the book is highly distinct from the rest of the graphic novel and functions as a physical, multi-layered visual gimmick: The Clear Text: The primary thoughts and written diary entries of Von Hammer are printed on standard, heavy-stock paper pages. The Sketched Acetate Landovers: Interspersed between the text are clear, transparent plastic (acetate) sheets. George Pratt drew raw charcoal sketches, plane schematics, and cross-hatching directly onto these transparent overlays. The Visual Effect: When you turn the clear acetate page over the printed text, the charcoal illustrations perfectly align with and frame the diary entries, mimicking the feel of an authentic, weathered historical journal cluttered with the pilot's hand-drawn field sketches.
