Synopsis

Set on Christmas Eve, the issue balances two parallel storylines dealing with family, mortality, and personal codes of honor. Hans von Hammer appears in a historical flashback sequence contrasting his legendary chivalry against General Wade Eiling's ruthless modern military pragmatism. A young Harris Eiling in a fuel-leaking Nieuport crosses paths with von Hammer's Fokker. Despite having total tactical superiority, the Enemy Ace refuses to destroy a disabled opponent. He flies alongside Harris, gives a respectful salute, and breaks formation into the clouds, leaving an insulted Harris to fire a futile pistol volley at the vanishing plane.

Collector Notes

A thematically rich cameo that uses von Hammer's code of honor as a moral foil rather than a story centerpiece. Co-written by Cary Bates and Greg Weisman, the sequence functions as a lesson in what military honor looks like stripped of ego, and the bitter irony that Eiling interprets mercy as insult. One of the more thoughtfully integrated Enemy Ace cameos of the post-Crisis era.
