Synopsis
Titled "Stille Nacht" (Silent Night), this poignant historical short story is heavily inspired by the real-life 1914 Christmas Truce of World War I. Hans von Hammer grounds his red triplane for Christmas Eve and experiences a fleeting, bittersweet moment of peaceful fraternization and shared humanity with enemy Allied soldiers in the trenches, before the harsh realities of the Great War force them back into conflict.
Collector Notes
Highly valued by DC military enthusiasts because Hans von Hammer rarely appeared in mainstream DC continuity during the late Post-Crisis era, this story stands as one of his final short stories before the entire DC Universe was rebooted by the Flashpoint event in 2011. Howard Chaykin, who had previously drawn Enemy Ace during the Men of War run, brings an earned familiarity to von Hammer's visual language. Written by the Fahey brothers, the Christmas Truce setting places von Hammer in one of World War I's most humanizing historical moments.
