Synopsis
Set against the blinding glare of the 1918 battle skies, the narrative tracks Hans von Hammer maneuvering his crimson Fokker Triplane through an isolated patrol zone. He intercepts an Allied reconnaissance biplane and engages them in a rapid, mathematically precise dogfight. Rather than focusing entirely on action, Kanigher uses the short layout to dive deeply into the Rittmeister's internal monologue — contrasting his mechanical, lethal calculation in the cockpit with the profound, exhausting sadness he experiences every time he executes a final, fatal burst of machine-gun fire. The story concludes with the enemy aircraft spiraling down in flames, leaving von Hammer alone in the silent clouds to reflect on his isolated existence as a solitary hunter before returning to his airfield.
