Synopsis
The issue houses an independent, standalone 10-page narrative titled "Blind Mission" (explicitly advertised via the small blue biplane inset window on the right side of the front cover grid). Set against the heavy winter mist of the 1917 Western Front, Rittmeister Hans von Hammer accepts an incredibly dangerous tactical assignment directly from the high command. He must fly a top-secret, un-armed reconnaissance mission deep behind Allied lines into a heavy anti-aircraft sector — flying completely blind without his usual machine gun defenses. The short narrative showcases the peak of Kanigher's tragic anti-war writing. As von Hammer navigates his crimson Fokker Triplane through a literal wall of exploding Allied flak, he is intercepting not to hunt down enemy lives, but to fulfill his rigid military duty to his country. The story reaches a brilliant, melancholic conclusion as he successfully charts the hidden positions and glides safely back to his airfield — reminding his men that true honor isn't measured by his body count, but by his ability to conquer the deadly battle skies with nothing but absolute flying grace.
