Synopsis

The explosive kickoff to the high-stakes, late-Bronze Age story arc 'Killers of the Sky.' This opening chapter focuses heavily on the reckless Allied ace Lt. Steve Savage (The Balloon Buster) as he leads the 27th Aero Squadron on a high-altitude patrol sweep over enemy territory. Seeking to break the standard Allied flight formations, Savage pushes his unit deep into imperial targets, only to be suddenly ambushed by an elite hunting pack of German Fokker Triplanes. Serving as a dramatic cliffhanger for the miniseries, Rittmeister Hans von Hammer makes a striking, wordless cameo appearance in his solid-crimson aircraft—instantly solidifying an unresolved sky rivalry that sets the stage for a brutal multi-issue dogfight.

Collector Notes

A major Late-Bronze Age key milestone, this issue marks the official takeoff of an action-packed three-part Balloon Buster vs. Enemy Ace rematch arc. Artist Dan Spiegle brings a incredibly clean, mechanically precise illustrative approach to the vintage aircraft panels that contrasts beautifully with Joe Kubert's traditional raw expressionism. Moving away from the book's standard layout rotation, the master lettering chores for this specific 8-page sequence are handled natively by Esphid Mahilum, making it a highly unique production crossover for collectors tracking Robert Kanigher's premier WWI icons.
