Synopsis
The world meets Hans von Hammer for the first time. Germany's greatest flying ace tears through Allied squadrons above the Western Front, his red Fokker Triplane a terror to all who face it. But in the silence of the Black Forest, walking beside his wolf companion, von Hammer reflects on the cost of every kill. A character unlike any other in war comics — the enemy, rendered in full humanity.
Collector Notes
This landmark issue marks the debut of one of the most complex characters in DC's war comics line. Robert Kanigher created von Hammer as a deliberate inversion of the typical war hero — honorable, introspective, and deeply tragic. Joe Kubert's expressionistic artwork brought an almost painterly quality to the combat sequences.
