Synopsis
Baron Otto von Hammer is killed by the French ace Monsieur Guillotine, a pilot whose modeled-after-the-Hangman visual and theatrical name mark him as a dark mirror of the enemies Hans has faced before. Kristina, the baron's nurse, witnesses the end. Von Hammer must absorb his father's death without the luxury of grief.
Collector Notes
The baron's death in only his second appearance is characteristic of the Men of War run's willingness to move quickly through consequence. Howard Chaykin's arrival on art is immediately apparent, his compositions are more angular and design-conscious than any previous Enemy Ace artist, bringing a different energy to the material that suits the increasingly noir-inflected storylines of this period.
