Synopsis

The relationship with the Burgundy siblings reaches its confrontation. A duel, a formal, archaic resolution to a conflict rooted in the war's devastation of everything formal and archaic. Kanigher uses the duel structure to force von Hammer into a mode of violence that his aerial combat is designed to insulate him from: personal, face-to-face, impossible to dignify.

Collector Notes

The Burgundy storyline across issues 13 and 14 is among the more novelistically structured sequences in the late Men of War run. Chaykin's interest in European history and his facility with period costume and setting makes the French aristocracy subplot read convincingly.
