Synopsis

The Comte de Burgundy and his sister Countess Heloise appear, French aristocrats whose world the war has destroyed in ways that mirror von Hammer's own losses. The title's double meaning is present throughout: last baron of a dying order, last baron of a personal code that the war is slowly making obsolete.

Collector Notes

Chaykin's design-forward approach to the European aristocracy setting works particularly well here, he has an instinct for the visual language of class and its decay. The parallel between von Hammer and the Burgundy family, both representing a world that no longer makes sense, is one of the more resonant thematic notes in the later run.
