Synopsis
Von Hammer reflects on the deaths that have accumulated around him, Schmidt, Schultze, and now the ghost of Baron Otto surfacing in recollection. The Black Wolf is there. The war continues. The story is as much meditation as action, Kanigher pausing the forward movement of the run to let the accumulated weight press down.
Collector Notes
One of the more interior stories in the Men of War era, Banner of Blood uses the recollection structure to take stock of where the character stands. By 1979 the Enemy Ace had been running for fourteen years and the supporting cast had changed substantially; this issue acknowledges that history rather than moving past it.
