The Balloon Buster crossover in the middle of the Very Private Hell arc is characteristic of the late Enemy Ace stories' willingness to bring the wider DC war comics universe into contact with von Hammer's isolated world. Severin draws Steve Savage with the same meticulous period authenticity he brings to von Hammer.
