Synopsis

Set in Bavaria, 1942. Hauptmann Peter Stalschmidt visits Castle von Hammer to recruit Hans back into the cockpit to save the collapsing Luftwaffe line against Russia. Hans, who actively despises Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime, reluctantly agrees solely out of an unbreakable tribal duty to protect his younger German compatriots. Flying a custom blood-red Messerschmitt Bf 109, he achieves immense lethal success on the Eastern Front, but his aircraft is shot down over Leningrad. Trapped on foot behind enemy lines, Hans walks back through the freezing Russian winter, witnessing the utter degradation of humanity, starvation, and battlefield atrocities.

Collector Notes

Garth Ennis openly based the historical realism and arc of an aging von Hammer on real-life Luftwaffe General Adolf Galland, who was famously anti-Nazi, commanded the Me 262 jet fighter squadron, and frequently clashed with high command over their tactical madness and political fanaticism. Chris Weston's art is intentionally claustrophobic and heavy with cross-hatching to emphasize the gritty, brutal conditions of the Russian front. The prestige-format length gives Ennis room to develop von Hammer's political conscience with a depth unprecedented in the character's history.
